Senior Scout Badges / Pengakap Putera

0

Malaysia scouts used proficiency badges from the Uk and then from Australia before we had our own design following our new training scheme for the senior scouts. As UK changed its scheme consisting of more than 50 plus badges for the senior scouts so did Malaysia, only very much later. We intoduced our very own design sometime in the late 1970s or early 1980s when stock of the old badges from UK and Australia ran out. Pictures of the Malaysia design show the first local issue of the five (5) award badges and the Chief Scout Award which is only one rank lower than the highest award King Scout.

Rover badges after independence

The rover scheme and the badges were the idea of a Mr E.M.F Payne (Chief Commissioner, Boy Scouts Association, Federation of Malaya Branch) who was an english gentleman. The scheme was in use from 1956 onwards and probably did not continue into 1970s.

Obsolete woven state/county badges

The badges on this page are from the 1970s. There exist earlier issues so please do not be alarmed if what you have in your collection do no look like what you see here. I have many of the varieties of the different state badges shown here. These badges were worn by the scouts of that particular state. During that period of time the state badge on the right pocket will indicate which state you were from. The district strip and number on the right sleeve will indicate exactly where a scout was from.

The Anugerah Ketua Pengakap Negara/ Chief Scout Award (its equavalent is the bushman thong under the old scheme) is only awarded to senior scouts. All the other badges namely Usaha, Maju and Jaya badges can be awarded to both the scouts and the senior scouts.

5th Issue

The 5th Issue was issued sometime in the early 1990s when the new design was launched in 1991. This is the current design and is still in use. Although the design is not obsolete but I have put them here because these are woven ones and were available for a very short period probably less than a year. Current badges are embroidered and their pictures are easily available on the internet. You may find many different varieties because there are just so many unofficial suppliers and the troops just do not care where they get their badges.

Here are some really old badges. Used from 1960s to early 1970s. Picture shows the Malaysia design tenderfoot, 2nd class and the 1st class badges. The design is quite similar to the UK equavalent badges.

Green Tenderfoot / Lencana Keahlian

This tenderfoot / lencana keahlian is green in colour and I got it sometime in the early 1980s but I am sure it was issued in the 1970s. I have now been told that it was used by the non uniform section namely the Committee Members in the Group/District/State/NHQ.

A really special tenderfoot/

King Scout - Pengakap Raja

2

The highest award for Malaysia Senior Scouts (Venture Scouts) is the King Scout Badge or in our national language lencana "Pengakap Raja".

I have shown here some of the King Scout Badges. These are varieties of Malaysia King Scout Badge- Pengakap Raja Badge. The embroidered badge with a King's crown on green was used until 1989. Earlier issues of the badge with the King's crown were woven ones. It was replaced with the Royal Headgear design which I have picture of some six varieties shown here. The earlier issues of the Royal Headgear were embroidered onto yellow felt followed by those embroidered onto orange felt.

There are also the 2 unofficial miniature King Scout - Version 1 Pengakap Raja badge issued by the the King Scouts Brotherhood (small badge with crown and no word). The other version is a private issue but is also widely used by adult/rover scouts.
